Have you ever heard of a guy by the name of Tom Zhang? You famous math guy with a Ph. D? No, well he's The Twin Prime Hero... Look him up. One view of his that I thought was worth expanding on was the fact that he brought up the point that the twin prime problem had been around for 200 years, is simple, and believed to be important. He does not claim to be the creator, but mealy an expander. Ideas about math have been around for a very long time. And as Mr. Zhang proves can always be made simpler and easier to understand. It is also a group effort. You may not be the one to ultimately solve a problem, but your findings might help the next person to solve the problem. Mr. Zhang also reminds us that it is the people who make something popular. We learn math all the way from elementary school through college and the information we retain from school will revolve around what you deemed to important. Mr. Zhang also says he became interested in math as a child. But then you might say "well I am an adult now so i can't do anything about my lack of interest..." To that I'll tell you that you can still become interested.
